About This Experience
Costumes and masking are an integral part of Venice identity. In the past, the city had so many laws regulating personal conduct and interaction between classes that wearing masks and costumes became a sort of social relief valve.
When masked,women could go out unescorted, beggars could rub elbows with patricians, and nearly everybody could attain a certain degree of freedom.
Nowadays this opportunity is limited to Carnival, but a visit to an atelier where costumes are still hand-sewn in preparation for it is an interesting and pleasant experience, and a different way to approach Venice.
